Reconciliation
The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)
The Catholic Church has seven sacraments. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist (Holy Communion), Reconciliation (Confession), Holy Orders, Matrimony (Marriage), and Anointing of the Sick.
What is Reconciliation? Jesus gives us hope in our call to holiness, by forgiving our sins and restoring us to intimacy with Him.
What did Jesus say to institute the sacrament of Reconciliation? Jesus said, "Peace be with you. As the Father who sent me, even so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Gospel of John 20:21-23
What does Reconciliation do for us? Reconciliation, otherwise known as Confession, forgives mortal and venial sins,
returns us to the state of grace, allows us to return to Holy Communion, removes the eternal punishment due to mortal sin, remits a portion of temporal punishment, reconciles us to God and to the church, grants us peace of conscience, and provides us with spiritual consolation.
Sacramental grace helps us to carry out the particular purpose of that sacrament. What is that for Reconciliation? It helps us to cure the deeper inclinations to evil that actual sins have put in our soul and makes it easier for us to keep out of sin in the future.
