Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism
The Catholic Church has seven sacraments. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist (Holy Communion), Reconciliation (Confession), Holy Orders, Matrimony (Marriage), and Anointing of the Sick.
What is Baptism? It is the birth in the new life of grace. It is the prerequisite for all other sacraments.
What did Jesus say to institute the sacrament of Baptism? "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." Gospel of John 3:5
What does Baptism do for us? It makes us an adopted child of God. It forgives original and all personal sin and fills the soul with grace. It confers the virtues of faith, hope, and love.
Sacramental grace helps us to carry out the particular purpose of that sacrament. What is that for Baptism? This grace helps us to live as children of god, makes it easier for us to believe in God and to act accordingly, and lessens our inclinations to evil.
