Anointing of the sick
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
The Catholic Church has seven sacraments. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist (Holy Communion), Reconciliation (Confession), Holy Orders, Matrimony (Marriage), and Anointing of the Sick.
What is Anointing of the Sick? This sacrament strengthens those who are ill or dying. It also calls Christians to accept and welcome suffering in faith as essential to their own growth in sanctity and to the Body of Christ.
What did Jesus say to institute the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick? "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the presbyters of the Church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven."
James 5:14
What does Anointing of the Sick do for us? It confers sanctifying grace which strengthens, gives courage, and heals the soul. Sometimes healing of the body and consecrates occurs the one receiving it to be united with Jesus’ suffering.
Sacramental grace helps us to carry out the particular purpose of that sacrament. What is that for Anointing of the Sick? This sacrament helps us to accept sickness as a purifying cross sent by God and even to accept death willingly from His hands whenever He chooses to send it.
How am I able to receive this sacrament? In order for a child, youth or adult, to receive this sacrament, they should be baptized Catholic. For non-emergencies such as before surgery, call the church office 480-987-0315. For emergencies, call the same number any time of day which will give you the emergency phone number to call.
So, in order to attain Heaven, we must be saints. To be a saint, we need sacramental grace.
To gain sacramental grace, we need the SACRAMENTS.
